Vitamin S Fest – Tāmaki Makaurau 26-31 October 2022

In 2002, Vitamin S was devised as a place where those interested in improvised music and performance could meet, perform, listen to, discuss, and generally interact with all aspects of this complex and largely misunderstood art form.

20 years later it is still providing an opportunity for any interested individual to perform with others each Monday in ‘Pool Night’ events – which comprise two trios of Vitamin S members chosen at random. Each week, new combinations of players and instruments combine and new music emerges as a result. Rain or shine.

To celebrate the milestone of two decades of continuous activity, Vitamin S in association with the Audio Foundation present a week-long festival of improvised music, dance and performance. Featuring a slew of performances across five different venues, the festival traverses small group improvisation, large ensemble conduction, a mass choir, dancers with musicians, film and a come-all open performance night.

Featuring international visitors Pheeroan akLaff and Sally Gates (U.S.A), Ōtepoti based dancer Julia Harvie and reedsman Reuben Derrick, Riki Gooch from Pōneke, Ōtepoti violinist Motoko Kikkawa and a massive lineup of Tāmaki locals – the Vitamin S Fest is an overload of experimental improvisation designed to boggle the ears, eyes and mind.
