Come join us in the afternoon on Sunday 25th March at 102 Landscape Road, Balmoral, to witness performances by acclaimed artist, researcher and electronic musician, Rachel Shearer (Angelhead, Queen Meanie Puss, Lovely Midget), recently returned multi-instrumental improviser, composer and vibraphonist, John Bell (Spoilers of Utopia, The Dominion Centenary Concert Band), and a new duo comprised of James Sullivan (God Destroyer) and Sam Longmore.
Auckland-based sound artist Rachel Shearer explores sound through a range of practices – experimental music, installation, audio visual projects and collaborations with practitioners of moving image and performance. She has a rich history releases through pivotal labels (Xpressway, Siltbreeze, Ecstatic Peace!, Corpus Hermeticum and Family Vineyard). In recent times, her work has consisted of translating analogies of form and patterns of energetic processes of the material world into crafted temporary acoustic spaces which focus on the our relation to the sounds of the environment, diving deep into this territory via performance and multichannel sound installation. This is a wonderful, and rare occasion to experience her work in an intimate, essentially ideal setting.
John Bell’s recent return to Aotearoa following five years residing in Korea is a boon for local’s interested in the outer limits of improvised music. Renowned for his work with Spoilers of Utopia, The Dominion Centenary Concert Band, and his frequent collaborations with German/Korean experimentalist, Alfred 23 Harth, Bell’s output as a soloist and bandleader has been published by many top imprints including iiii Records, Kendra Steiner Editions, while his presence as a collaborator has featured on many many more. His recent set with Los Angeles performer, Anna Homler, at Auckland’s Unitarian Church, was at once delicately playful, and powerfully decisive.
James Sullivan and Sam Longmore’s recent collaborations blend the glossiest aspects of their mutual interest in improvised electronic soundscapes. Drawing on their past work, solo, in Longmore’s case, and with Christchurch-based duo, God Destroyer (with Alex Donnithorne), in Sullivan’s, the two seek to stretch and twist the tradition of ambient collage.
