“BJ Leo is a sonic artist, producer and composer from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and currently based in Te Whanganui ā Tara (Wellington). He is a recent graduate of the sonic arts programme at Te Kōkī – NZ School of Music and has previously released works on labels Finest Ego (DE) and Strange Behaviour (NZ). In 2022, he was awarded the Susan Rhind prize and has recently exhibited works at Adam Gallery and the Australasia Computer Music Conference. He was recently announced as the 2023 Toi Pōneke Sound Artist in Residence for a new exhibition Breathwork, due in 2024.
Mutuals marks the first release of BJ Leo’s recent work exploring club and ambient genres through new techniques in spectral fission and ambisonic spatialisation. Drawing from Albert Bregman’s work on sonic fission and the Spectralism movement of the 1970s, the EP deconstructs and reconstructs breaks, samples and digital synthesis to reimagine their spectral qualities. Mutuals reinterprets these sonic fragments in three-dimensional sound using ambisonic spatialisation. The result is a new spectral interpretation of some of the core sonorities of electronic music.”
