We are excited to announce a special night of collaborative music in association with Reflections of a Mind Absorbed with Play – the upcoming exhibition in the AF Gallery by Motoko Kikkawa!
In keeping with Motoko’s history of genre-crossing collaborations and psychedelic experimentation, this concert is sure to include music for the mind, body and soul.
Motoko Kikkawa is regarded as one of the Ōtepoti-underground’s most prolific and versatile exponents. Her presence across noise, contemporary classical, free improvisation and quasi-ritual fields on violin, voice and atmospheres is as recognisably unique and identifiable as it is sympathetic, musical and adaptive. Notable projects include The Ladder is Part of the Pit and Ray Off, though Kikkawa’s collaborations are essentially impossible to track!
On this special evening, Motoko will perform thrice, alongside a stable of stalwart werido-wonderers, staples of Antipodean oddities and Australasian rarities:
– Tāmaki Makaurau’s master of digital fuzz, Ducklingmonster (File Folder, Octopus, It Hurts, Maltese Falcons, etc.)
– The hypnotic and wholly heartfull rhythms of Justin Taulu, aka ‘Science Comunity’ (Horsehead Nebula, Mental Health Triangle, Nudibranch, etc.)
– The curator, musician, artist, Tokerau Wilson, aka ‘Big Fato Raro’, aka ‘Lady Grey MC’, a maker of psycho-tropical layers of meaning (Big Fat Raro, Not Even Owls, Mental Health Triangle, etc.)
– The rich Tarkovsky-dronescapes of Renee Barrance, temporarily seconded in the hills of Muriwai (OV PAIN)
Ray Off, ‘My Favourite Plum 2:18’ (United Fairy Moons, 2008)
The Ladder is Part of the Pit, ‘ritual soot’ (2013)
