Generative music workshop with Paul Timings – 3/09/2017

af web'

Join sound-artist Paul Timings for an afternoon learning about the programming software MaxMSP, and creating your own generative-music patch.

This workshop will introduce and apply some beginner/intermediate concepts relating to musical programming languages, including how to make a sound, how to make an amplitude envelope for a sound, how to create rhythmic relationships between multiple sounds, how to make harmonic relationships between multiple sounds, and how to achieve rhythmically/harmonically interesting results.

Participants will be lead through the basics of generative music synthesis in MaxMSP – a process through which sounds can be synthesized and distributed by software based on probabilities set by the musician – ultimately creating their own patches.

Examples of the results achievable with these patches can be found here

Attendees will need to bring a laptop with a free 30-day trial of Max7 installed aw well as a set of headphones. Max7 can be downloaded for free here. Some headphones can be provided by the Audio Foundation.

Numbers will be limited. To RSVP for this workshop, please email admin@audiofoundation.org.nz
