Cross Modal: Audiovisual Sonic Art
26 May – 26 June
Across live performance, exhibition, and film screening, Cross Modal presents a variety of projects which draw connections between sound and moving image. Cross Modal is a project motivated by an understanding that what is heard and what is seen are related. Works presented here occupy a space of interference, fermentation and inter-influence, with each avenue of perception feeding into the other.
With work by Ary Jansen, Benedict Quilter, Chris Schmelz, Ducklingmonster, Isabella Dampney, Kim Pieters, Luke Shaw, Scott Flanagan, Theo McDonald, Tjalling de Vries

Cross Modal 1: Audiovisual performances at the Wine Cellar
Wednesday 26 May, 8pm
Please join us for a synaesthetic spectacle as Ducklingmonster, Luke Shaw and P Wits (Benedict Quilter) initiate the Cross Modal project. Interacting combinations of sound and light will transform the Wine Cellar as overlapping projections and kaleidoscopic sonics effect experiential wonderment.
Ducklingmonster (Beth Dawson) has been a pivotal figure within Aotearoa’s underground musical ecosystem for close on 20 years. During this time she has developed a unique approach to audiovisual experimental practice which she has applied in a staggering array of groups including The Futurians, File Folder, Rise of City Cat Cult, Zombie!Fuck?, Ghastlies, Octopus, It Hurts, Maltese Falcons, Evidence X, Murdering Monsters, and many more. Additionally, Dawson is an accomplished painter, zine- and film-maker.
Luke Shaw is an artist and musician based in Ōtautahi. His current research is focused on repurposing outmoded visual technologies into new sonic languages and articulating the relationship between sound and space through site specific interventions.
P Wits is the solo project of Benedict Quilter who also performs in heavy Auckland outfits Psychick Witch and Yawn. Quilter also prolific experimental imprint, Independent Woman Records (“easily one of the best current NZ underground labels” – Chemical Imbalance).
