About Place Stories (Matariki)
20 June to 1st August
Papakura Gallery and Papakura Township (via the Place Stories Matariki app).

Place Stories (Matariki) is an app-based sound installation that weaves through the spaces of Papakura. Local artists have contributed poems, waiata, sonic soundscapes, and eclectic soundtracks celebrating Matariki and the land and spirit of the town. The works are ‘placed’ using the latest in locative mobile technology and are designed to play only in and around spaces that need some love, attention or celebration. Contributing artists include: Mahu Rawiri, Haare Williams, Moe Lolesi, Kim Newall, Fred Harrison and Uniform. They represent mana whenua, the Audio Foundation, Tokelauan cultural leaders, local kaumatua, new media artists and underground collectives.

The app can be downloaded after the 20th of June from iTunes and Google Play stores otherwise you can hear the works via an augmented reality installation at Papakura Art Gallery. Please note the app needs a recent phone with reasonably high spec to work (ie iPhone 5 or Galaxy 5). If you don’t have this phone bring your headphones and plug into a friend’s device so someone else on the tour.

Place Stories (Matariki) was created and produced by Maggie Buxton. App interface by Kim Newall and app technology by Imersia Group. Funding was provided by Creative New Zealand.
