This November we welcome the artistic duo The Fuck Chairs (a.k.a. Morgan Oliver and Michael Morley) into the AF Gallery!
For this exhibition, The Fuck Chairs have developed a multi-media installation and performance composed of scent, sound, video, lighting and atmospheric effects. Volume activated L.E.D. lighting racks and two laser lights project colour in response to wind-chimes, activated by a fan; a continuous sound composition unfolds, as an unnatural and scented fog fills the void.
Images of a distant electronic past, filtered by experience, history, gaming, and simulation probe an alternative fictional narrative of rave culture and hallucination performed by robots, avatars, monsters and ghosts.
Morley and Oliver will be performing on the opening night, which coincides with the opening of the 2016 Nowhere! Festival – more info here: www.audiofoundation.org.nz/festival/nowhere-festival
Michael Morley is well known internationally for his musical work with experimental free-rockers The Dead C, and for his enigmatic and ever-varied solo project, Gate. Perhaps less well know is his visual practice, in which he responds primarily to the tradition of painting, creating pieces which humorously attempt to recreate abstract utopian ideas as graphic symbols. These works inevitably operate as failures in an acknowledgement of the elusive nature of utopia and the futility of conclusive or authoritative attempts at its recreation.
Morgan Oliver is an interactive artist and designer whose works employ a playful and experimental approach, building on his expertise in the fields of interactive screen and game design.
