Rāhana Tito-Taylor (Te Parawhau, Uriroroi, Ngāti Māhuta) presents a series of new puoro mouthpieces and prototypes. Designed to be used in tandem with saxophones, this suite of work draws attention to sonic and conceptual dichotomies and sympathies between instruments evolving from te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) and those which trace roots to te ao Pākehā (the western worldview).
Employing a wide range of materials including native timbers and fibres, paua shell, and alto and soprano saxophones, these hybrid pieces inspire new pathways for expressiveness. ORO NGĀTAHI HAERE invites audiences to engage with ontologies of the combined instruments and their musical whakapapa. Drawing both from connected traditions and varying approaches to creating sound, the novel sound textures of these instruments are made available through the partnership of puoro and brass, working together i te ao hou to summon new voices and ideas while blurring the lines of tonal fluidity and structural precision through a shared body and sound.
Nau mai ki tēnei kaupapa e haere ake ana – we welcome you to this space of continual discovery, understanding and empathy of sound worlds.
