Please join us to mark the opening of The World to Breathe, an exhibition of instruments designed by Tāmaki-Makaurau-based multimedia artist and piano tuner, Nancy Howie.
The World to Breathe showcases the full array of Nancy’s musical creations and includes a collection of stringed instruments, aerophones, and pitched percussion sculptures developed and built at her home during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.
While she is a piano tuner by trade, Nancy’s interest in experimental instruments came by way of her songwriting. In 2020, Nancy wrote an arrangement for a song which featured a cello, an instrument she had neither played, nor had access to while in lockdown. After improvising the cello from found objects, Nancy sought to improve on and expand the scope of her designs, and to date she has developed approximately 25 novel and creative instruments.
Often employing scavenged and recycled materials, this collection began with a fencepost-cello and quickly expanded with the development of balloon-saxophones, unusual percussion instruments, and an improvised hurdy gurdy.
In her own words, “The World to Breathe is a celebration of a DIY ethos and the testing of the limits of pandemic-borne creativity.”
Opens: Wednesday 9 March, 5.30pm (with refreshments from Liberty Brewing Company)
