In 1987, coinciding with an exceptional alignment of the planets, thousands of new age adherents gathered among the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, for the world’s first globally synchronized meditation event. To this day, the main drag of this small town – a kind of mindfulness strip mall nestled high in the Sonoran Desert – sustains a unique New Age tourist industry where every other store sells crystals, offers chakra balancing, tantric healing and UFO tours on the side.

In the audio-visual exhibition Woo-Curious, Julie Hill presents documents from her 2016 visit to the most “woo-woo”’ place in the United States America. The exhibition’s title refers to the US slang ‘woowoo’, used to describe people who are interested in aliens, witches, crystals and miscellaneous New Age religions. Come along with Julie as she has her aura photographed, receives a psychic reading, meditates, encounters angels, fairies and goblins, and visits a UFO landing pad.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a book available for purchase for $5.

Julie Hill is a fiction writer, screenwriter, journalist, playwright and RNZ programme producer.
