Please join us in celebrating the opening of Upon Reflection, an exhibition of new works by Auckland artist and musician, James G. Sullivan.
Through a trio of sonic sculptures and an accompanying collection of photographs, Sullivan reflects on his experiences living and working in Christchurch during and immediately following the earthquakes of 2010 & 2011, as well the role these experiences still play in life 8 years later. His evolving soundscapes evoke both the stillness and the intensity of geological forces, referencing the jagged lines of the Richter scale of magnitude and, in abstraction, the earthquakes which levelled many parts of central Christchurch.
Alongside the sculptural works, the imagery of Sullivan’s photographs serve as a record of what life in Christchurch was like in the wake of the earthquakes, portraying the city in what he describes as a “soporific daze”. In relation to these images, Sullivan notes how his photographic practice was from him “one of few constants” as the city changed rapidly and irrevocably around him.
These images will be available at the opening in a limited, untitled edition of books published with assistance from others who were displaced by the earthquakes.
