Rāga Time Cycle

Balamohan Shingade is an Auckland-based artist, writer and musician. This exhibition is a cross-section of his ongoing research of Indian classical music, exploring visual representations of rāga theory in the form of sketches, drawings, diagrams and notes. How can one categorically represent the temporal nature of rāga? What might the principles of rāga improvisation look like on paper? How can one incorporate melodic ornamentation into existing systems of notation?

As a vocalist in the Hindustani classical tradition, Shingade has performed in Hyderabad, Sydney and at various festivals in Auckland. He has exhibited at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, RM Gallery, Papakura Art Gallery and Snake Pit since graduating from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2012 with a BFA(Hons).
