Wondered about exploring the modular synth world?
As a precursor to the evenings performances, come along for a free afternoon to hear experts in the field talk about the process of creating music with modular synths! From practical advice about getting started to the exploration of ambient aesthetics.
The afternoon will also feature giveaways from https://synthesizer.nz
Peter Hobbs, MMus:: An introduction to modular synths, and creating Big Sounds from a Small Case
This talk will introduce core modular synth principles with basic patches and introduce newcomers to how music making differs between fixed architecture synths and modular environments.
Peter will also advise on how to maximise a small modular system to create rich tapestries of sound.
Andrew Taylor: Patch From Scratch
Andrew will be creating an analog modular patch from scratch and exploring Rob Hordijk and Peter Blasser modular chaotic devices.
Dr David Chechelashvili: The engagement dynamics of ambient modular music.
This talk will explore how ambient music is often regarded as merely relaxing background sound and will introduce the concept of interpassivity to uncover more nuanced compositional and listening experiences. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory and aesthetics, it will argue that listeners and composers can delegate enjoyment of the music, engaging passively rather than actively. By comparing ambient music with other genres, the talk will highlight how its lack of active participation can foster unique aesthetic experiences, encouraging a broader framework for understanding and appreciating modular music.
These talks will be followed in the evening by performances by master modular artists from 7pm:
