John Atkinson (Aa), Akali Strange, Tom Cadillac (Feeding Frenzy Fridays) – 6/02/15

John Atkinson (Aa)

John Atkinson spent most of the aughts in Brooklyn, NY playing keyboards/laptop/percussion and singing in Aa (Big A little a), a long-running (and still extant) drummers + electronics experimental rock ensemble. Dubbed “the official dance band for the post-apocalypse” by SPIN’s Christopher Weingarten, their latest album, “VoyAager” was released in January 2014 on Northern Spy Records and was hailed by Pitchfork as “an expertly sculpted 3D sound world.”
Since moving to Los Angeles in 2011, John has been composing mostly-instrumental music under the moniker Low Nox. Influenced by the murky, analog ambient work of Jon Hassel and Brian Eno as well as the more contemporary electronic music textures of Vladislav Delay and Tim Hecker, these soundscapes are built around heavily-processed field recordings from both nature and urban settings to create a sound that is both deeply organic and unmistakably digital.
Recent work has included several video collaborations: the 2014 indie feature-length film L for Leisure, which screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project documentary ASASIN ÎN LEGE; and the experimental animated short “Eschaton Central” by Christoph Steger, presented in a 2013 exhibition called “New: Four” at the H&R Block Artspace in Kansas City, MO.
