Thanks for the link to his sight . .. I have been trying to get back there for years! http://www.eldian.com/chaoslab/ChaoslabDesktop760x480.html To digress slightly into VJ'ing .. ' through the Mu Mu era and the G times .. there was a really some good crew of Vj's spinning in and around Wellington .. Some of the ideas being produced back then, still exceed what I see happening currently. I still am in touch with quite a few of the heads from those days, but many of them are not working projects anymore. I know a bunch of the WGT boys lost a bit on Sweetwaters when it folded .. not to exclude the disappearance of the G and Check Point .. It's been great getting back to chch .. and touching down with Warp TV .. who did visuals at one of my first ever "Raves" back in 1995 @ Dimension 5 .. http://www.obscure.co.nz/profiles/warptv Current projects we are trying to shift gears on now days is multi screen imaging. Or doing large format projection using multiple projectors. // www.vvvv.org provides some interesting solutions. .. but I just came across another interesting and cheap alternative. Last generation X-box - re-moded with Linux .. acting as network devices. They come with an 8gig memory. 5.1 sound & Composite out. You can do interesting things inside the X-box vision output stage, like dictate what part of the image the X-box outputs. So you can use them to chop up an image into multiple parts. (in theory) So a networked, 6 channel audio, video control/scaler device with its own memory . X-box!! Cheap $$ being the key. There are lots of other ways to do this with vision, but it gets really expensive really fast, and the technology is not as robust as an X-box .. which is pizza and beer proof, fast to reboot .. etc. On the note of AV being expensive. Part of the initial burst of VJ'ing in Wellington was due to a few liberated AV technicians who used to make the corporate AV gear go out the back door after and off the parties for a bit of fun. Almost 10 years later the gear is getting cheap enough, that it can be accessed. Still it always pays to know a few Technicians?! > I think the bigger music festivals could accommodate a series of > different spaces that were interactive. I think where this might be happening ' is at Uprising / Canaan Downs. We were there last year doing some lighting. The event seems conducive to lots of people bring smaller projects of interest and presenting them beyond the 'dance zones'. The land scape certainly lends itself to lots of interaction. This all really depends on the festival organization. Which is where I think Uprising may be open to this possibility, consider the festival is still in its growth phase. [On the second night there was this Grateful dead type chap who set himself up in the trees between zones. He had about 30 instruments, and several microphones (open) and was playing covers for anyone who wanted .. Kenny Rodgers / Bob Marley .. He had his own geny & PA .. the whole sound was wound on reverb, so it was the beautiful haunting freak sound compared to the beat beat rumble of the dance. I almost cried it was so good] .. It is interesting for me, having been involved through some of the conceptual success of the Gatherings. That other outdoor / multi day festivals have not included 'inter-zone' concepts. They make events much more enjoyable to attend, and extend the dimension of experience. I know that Splore has this .. !! Many of peoples memories of the Gathering are not the main stages, but the smaller oddities that occurred in between the zones. This is been the primary drive of the 3rd Space project. To open up the areas outside the "main space" for sonic/anything installation. Flipping back to Canaan. The land is owned by a Trust now. So could be approached by the experimental community for a self contained festival? A summer camping trip with PA's ?? Just having a large area to make noise / light / chaos .. with out upsetting others/each other would be really nice. I certainly need room to run up some large PA gear with weird noise !! And would be delighted to be free of dance music ... > It would be several > days and probably two nights. Again .. I would be interesting to do something like this .. but with out all the dance music! I find the agenda of dance parties to be quite ridged these days. Aside from the fact I just can't handle PA being run under compression for 48. Anyone ever heard of dynamic .. > I'm highly keen on bringing Maori Navigation and Cosmology (Taatai Arorangi) into the mix and using > the whole thing as a platform to generate awareness for dark sky protection. Maybe that's yet > another space! Now thats a cool idea .. He has given me excellent feedback to my ideas and work over the years. Very open to the alternative. Technically switched on. > Funny thing they sound sort of ok without dbx now, because > ive never had a big enough system in a quiet enough place to get the real thing back. I think we need to sort this out. This is really important to me. One recent realization I had, was that a lot of people have not had the opportunity of scale when working with sound. From setting up large PA's over the years, my scale for starting to do something interesting is about 60K. I would love to (somehow) provide the opportunity for lots of experimental artists to perform in a much larger dynamic. Not to be louder .. but to be able to work with scale, dimension. Hence my comments re:dynamic. So often I stand in front of large PA's and everything is at the red line. I would really love to hear Artists play the range of the systems. You know nice Drone sounds on a 100K pa .. spread around large landscapes .. so you could listen by riding a bicycle around ..! > I haven't done anything really special for so many years and I'm trying to figure out what would be > different and worthwhile. Stuff I am working on is (large format) multi channel, surround audio, using phase manipulation, time alignment, multiple layers of audio systems. (primary & 3rd space) delayed live feedback. Immersive sound systems with multiple movable sweet spots. Treating sound systems as architecture, and setting multiple systems in place to be performed simultaneously, by either a single artist or several. Widely distributed & networked sound systems, each adjustable from a central point, or at the location. live microphone input/feedback .. interactive self feeding systems. / perfrom into one microphone .. hear it on another system in the distribution, at another time. ?! > Anyone know if cooling the smoke from a smoke machine makes it lie close to the ground? Yes .. it's a bit tricky, but can be done. I have seen people run smoke through adapted chilly bins, or small fridge boxes. The easiest way is to adapt one of those chilly bin beer keg systems. You already have the spiral tube you can pack ice around. You can buy professional systems to do it .. but expensive ! What really helps is cool damp weather. or a frost! Whats also fun is making portable smoke machines with a coil & gas burner. You just need liters of fluid cause if you get the heat right you can pump several liters in minute. Scheduled to perform are Pauline Oliveros (USA), Ione (USA), Metamkine (France), Runzelstirn and Gurglestock (Switzerland/Japan), Dave Phillips (Switzerland) Justice Yeldham and the Dynamic Ribbon Device (Australia). Joining them from around New Zealand are Phil Dadson, Plains with Gate, and Crude. Born in 1932, US composer Pauline Oliveros is a living legend having pioneered new ways of thinking about sound. In the late 1950s she was amongst the first US composers to work with electronic music alongside the likes of Steve Reich and Terry Riley. For this visit she will be reworking her seminal 1966 composition A Little Noise in the Sytem, the first to use her Expanded Instrument System and an important precursor to contemporary ideas of noise. She will also perform two recent pieces with regular collaborator, vocal artist Ione. Also playing is one of New Zealand?s most respected senior sound artists, Phil Dadson. La Cellule d'Intervention METAMKINE is an open-ended group including musicians and filmmakers researching the relationship between image and sound. Through the magic of mirrors, multiple projectors and highly ingenious live on stage editing, Metamkine produces and directs a new film with each of their performances. Working around a core narrative, they spill eddies of impromptu vignettes, accompanied by a live soundtrack of tape fragments and ancient synthesiser sounds. These three collaborators, who have worked together for ten years, have succeeded in pushing the boundaries of film and soundtrack into the realm of live performance. In the same spirit, Plains will be presenting in collaboration with a moving image work by Gate. Influenced by martial arts attack patterns and the notorious actions of the Viennese performance artists of the 1960s and 70s, Schimpfluch is a loose collective of bruitists and performers dealing with ?psycho-physical tests and trainings?. At the core of the group are Rudolf Eb.er, Dave Phillips and Joke Lanz(absent). Using sound, their often brutal performances challenge their audience?s responses using anything from voice and handguns to a theremin and dead fish. Sharing the Shchimpfluch sensibility and joining them for their NZ tour is Australian glass performer Lucas Abela aka Justice Yeldham and the Dynamic Ribbon Device. Also joining them in Auckland is one of NZ?s most prolific recording artists, Matt Middleton aka Crude. Alt.music is an ongoing series of events, regularly bringing a vital injection of contemporary sound art from around the world to New Zealand. Organised by the Audio Foundation, Alt.music began as an international festival of experimental music and sound art in 2001, followed by successive festivals in 2002 and 2004. Previous Alt.Music artists include Keith Fullerton Whitman, Peter Rehberg, David Toop, Pan Sonic, Tetuzi Akiyama, Jon Rose, Voice Crack, Sachiko M, Francisco Lopez, Pierre Bastien, Oren Ambarchi, Alan Licht, Richard Nunns and the Dead C. Alt.music is supported by Creative New Zealand, Fulbright Foundation, Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, AUT, The University of Auckland?s National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries, Liquid Architecture, Room40, Telecom 39th Auckland International Film Festival and The Edge in association with Stamp www.audiofoundation.org.nz www.myspace.com/altmusicfestival -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Proceedings kick off at 8.00pm sharp and there > is limited seating available. > > Cheers > > John > > Dean Roberts Concert 14 May 2007 Starkwhite is pleased to present a concert by Dean Roberts on 14 May 2007. Roberts is one of New Zealand's leading practitioners in the field of contemporary music and has produced a number of albums to critical acclaim. His releases on Staubgold, Mille Plateaux and Kranky Records are regarded as touchstones of contemporary experimental music. He weaves elements of rock, electro-acoustic, minimalism and free improvisation into unusually affecting song cycles that sound equally avant-futuristic and hauntingly ancient, like the ghost of songs past. His album The Black Moths Play the Grand Cinema was described by the Wire Magazine as: "A tremendous achievement where everything fits, less of an attempt to blend genres than a demonstration of how for the truly imaginative, genres remain utterly meaningless." Roberts has worked extensively in the USA and Europe collaborating with some of the big names of experimental music from Sonic Youth, Otomo Yoshide, Jim O'Rourke, Phill Niblock, Tower Recordings, Mike Cooper, Martin Brandlmayr, Werner Dafeldecker, Eugene Chadbourne, Kevin Drumm, Fennesz and Tony Buck. He featured recently in the Wire Magazine's Seismic Performances: 30 Concerts that Shook the Planet, where Jon Dale described his performance as "affecting a complete transformation of both songs and the performance space itself, ritualizing the interaction between guitar and voice and forcing himself through the barriers of his material with an intensity I had previously only witnessed on rare occasions. He pulled songs apart, losing himself in repetitions and sometimes effecting brute force on his guitar to wrench near-violent clusters of notes from the instrument." At Starkwhite Roberts will present his unusual juxtapositions of instrumentation, verse and sonic experiments revealing the art of the song as a far more suggestive, highly experimental medium that one could assume - more akin to popular or "folk" music given the treatments of an avant-garde composer. Soon to embark on an extensive tour of Europe, with shows commissioned in Rome, Venice, Paris, Berlin, Vienna and many stops in between, Roberts' tour will culminate with the recording of an album of new material in Europe. Admission to the Starkwhite concert is by donation and a limited edition CD will be available at the event along with various limited releases on CD and LP, so please come along support this fund-raising event for his trip. Proceedings will start at 8.00pm sharp with limited seating capacity. Located in New Zealand on Auckland's Karangahape Road, Starkwhite presents a programme of artists' projects, solo shows, independently curated exhibitions and occasional forays into new music and other interdisciplinary practices. Starkwhite also represents artists from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific rim. Please contact the gallery for further information on this performance. Although there's a few initiatives out there, I didn't feel any of them covered this space adequately. Sites like Artbash are much broader and almost never touch the area, TheBigIdeas sections confuse terms and don't provide much content, and ADA (aotearoaa digital arts) receives sporadic plaintext posts in a condensed format which misses the rich-media opportunities available in blogging. Realise everyone's busy, so I've setup a group blog format which means that there's always someone posting and the workload is much less. We've already got 9+ contributors who'll be writing on topics like digital art history, Second Life, VJing, and video game interaction. The blog has been setup using Blogger, which is very easy, providing a simple Word-like interface for posting. I hope to increase the profile of digital arts among artists, programmers, writers, and academics in this country, to provide a way to share interesting work, and to make it easier to connect with other practitioners. There's not a lot there yet (been focusing on getting contributors) but once everyone gets posting it should have a good buzz to it. (http://scenewindow.blogspot.com/) Let me know if you're interested (luke.munn at gmail.com) and I'll send you an email which makes you an Author. This performance by Derrick comes soon after the completion of his solo album "Peeping Behind the Bucket" (supported by Creative Communities), a collection of recordings of acoustic noise performed on solo saxophone and clarinet. This experimental sound and visual artist, who was also cited by Peter Shapiro in his Rough Guide to Drum 'n' Bass as an influence on the developing UK breakcore scene, has made numerous and varied releases on UK and European labels, as well as his own Adverse Records imprint. The Haints of Dean Hall are Stephen (the Subliminals) and Kathryn. Their debut album was recorded during a brief visit Kathryn made to Auckland in the summer of 2005 around a few guitar tracks Stephen had composed. Kathryn was invited to put down vocals and provide some lyrics, most of which were impromptu. Around the sleeps of a five week old baby, the delicate and dusty songs were recorded anywhere in the house far away enough as not to wake her up, using one mike and mostly acoustic guitar, in sessions that extended deep into the night. What initially started as a "wonder what would happen if" unfolded before them as ideas were jammed, structures worked out and main tracks put down in a day. A return visit by Kathryn a couple of months later, saw the writing and completion of the remaining tracks. Kathryn currently lives in a small town in Australia and this brought some frustrating moments as the opportunity to change things was denied by distance. Everything recorded had to remain as it was, instinctive and organic. Tex Houstons mixing and mastering remained loyal to the fragility of the late night, low volume contemplative sound. The songs are sung snatches of memory, of guarded references to a 'Carteresque' family album of 'manners and mystery'. Kathryn's fascination with the American South and her own upbringing around the Bunnythorpe area in the Manawatu, grants a natural cultural crossover in her mind (she wonders if Flannery O'Conner could sing and what would she have sounded like...). Stephen's very distinctive guitar is often ghostly and yet sometimes brash, as he has turned the squalling feedback sounds (that were his trademark in the subliminals) in on themselves, resulting in sparse and delicate textures. http://www.myspace.com/thehaintsofdeanhall ...Bonanza are Made In New Zealand - to reference the most recent jingoistic marketing campaign, they're Made From New Zealand. Beginning of the century. New Zealand. Looking out the window, a woman awaits the return of her lover. Instead, she receives the visit of a young soldier, who, as always, comes to read her a story...the same old story. A story meant to to remind her why she should not wait any longer. Inspired by the myth of Hades with references to 'A Season in Hell' by french poet Arthur Rimbaud, the film is an allegory to the pursuit of absolute love. Duplicity, imagination, hidden corners of the mind are the arsenals of choice. Hades' Window is a hommage to actress, poet and director Sally Rodwell who died tragically last year. The Unknown Rockstar intends to use guitar and piano to work his solo explorations of the melodic, the overtonal, the dronal and the repetitive. He indulges his whims in art galleries and other low key venues. Jeff Henderson is an incredible multi-instrumentalist, with interests in many facets of music. He is the force behind Happy, and also has just recently began the iiii label, which has amazing recordings of some of the great groups associated with Happy. Sugar-face is a guitar explorer, who moves with ease between singing into his guitar, conjuring walls of feedback, and pushing riffs around. Deep Earplug Music was recorded live at the first Deep Earplug Music gig in 2006, and is a guitar based drone and tone piece. Pickel is a pair of contrasting live echo guitar pieces. HSP is the longest running artist led contemporary art space in New Zealand, located in central Christchurch. Alongside HSP's 2007 gallery programme, HSP is seeking new initiatives outside the gallery space and it is hoped that HSP can help more artists making sound based and experimental audio work. HSP is passionate about the role that artists and musicians play within the social milieu of Christchurch, and want to help promote and re-energise the inner city and surrounding areas with challenging and experimental contemporary art and audio work. HSP wishes reach out beyond the walls of our gallery in bold and interactive ways which will strengthen the practices of all involved and continue to engage the interest of those communities that comprise and support the initiatives of HSP. HSP is currently seeking to establish an arts and music based radio broadcast with Mofo 107.4fm, a small station located in central Christchurch. It is envisaged that the broadcast will be a lunchtime programme featuring artist interviews, reviews, music and sound work. HSP sees this as an exciting venue for showcasing new and emerging sound work and we currently have a very supportive audience and are aiming to broaden the scope of what the public in Christchurch expects from contemporary art and audio work. HSP is currently seeking expressions of interest in creating work for this project. If there is any information that you require regarding HSP and our intended project, please do not hesitate to contact me. My contact number at the gallery is #03 3665363, and my email address is offsite at hsp.org.nz I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Judith Carnaby HSP is funded by Creative New Zealand and supported by Tiger Beer.
