From the Susan Lawly forums: http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0511/Singing_Iceberg.mp3 ?Here?s an MP3 of the sounds made by Iceberg B-09A in Antarctica. It was recorded by scientists from Germany?s Alfred Wegener institute for polar and marine research, as they recorded seismic signals to measure earthquakes and tectonic movements on the Ekstroem ice shelf on Antarctica?s South Atlantic coast. From the Wegener Institute press release: Tracking the signal, the scientists found a 50 by 20 kilometer iceberg that had collided with an underwater peninsula and was slowly scraping around it. ?Once the iceberg stuck fast on the seabed it was like a rock in a river,? said scientist Vera Schlindwein. ?The water pushes through its crevasses and tunnels at high pressure and the iceberg starts singing. The iceberg sounds were originally recorded at 0.5 hertz, far below the range of human hearing. The MP3 here is speeded up many times to bring the sounds into the audible range. TIM COSTER - LANDING (CDR) - AU$12 / US$12 half/theory is delighted to present our first release by an international artist - New Zealander Tim Coster's beautiful album "Landing". Tim Coster is a new breed of field recordist. Not content to simply present a collection of sonic holiday snaps, yet not effecting his material to the point of digital abstraction, Coster's compositions always maintain distinct hints of identifiable sounds which create (rather than document) a genuine sense of space and place. Although his extensive instrumentation is listed on the cover (everything from computer to birthday candle to a mysterious 'soundclub') Coster blends electronics and instruments so effectively that to identify source material becomes difficult and irrelevant. This record is soft enough to lull a listener into sleep, but not without some quite harsh textures and tones buried deep within each piece. There is a beautiful grasp of dynamics present here. Subtle shifts in the pieces invite the listener into a kind of hypnotic state, and sparse interjections demand the listener's attention right til the end of the album. http://halftheory.com/index.php?go=content&id=25 Full listing of half/theory releases http://www.halftheory.com/index.php?go=content&id=4 http://www.halftheory.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Prix Ars Electronica 2006 International Competition for Cyberarts The Prix Ars Electronica - International Competition for Cyberarts is being conducted for the 19th time in 2006. In addition to the classic categories-Interactive Art, Net Vision, Computer Animation / Visual Effects and Digital Musics-Digital Communities and [the next idea] Art and Technology Grant competition that debuted last year will be reprised. Prix Ars Electronica 2006 Start of Online Submissions: January 10, 2006 Online Submission Deadline: March 17, 2006 Details about entering are available online only at http://prixars.aec.at Total Prize Money: 117,500 Euro 6 Golden Nicas 12 Awards of Distinction Up to 12 Honorary Mentions in each category For further information please contact Iris Mayr: info at prixars.aec.at COMPUTERANIMATION / VISUAL EFFECTS The "Computer Animation / Visual Effects" category has been part of the Prix Ars Electronica since its very inception. It recognizes excellence in independent work in the arts and sciences as well as in high-end commercial productions in the film, advertising and entertainment industries. In this category, artistic originality counts just as much as masterful technical achievement. DIGITAL MUSICS Contemporary digital sound productions from the broad spectrum of "electronica" come in for consideration in the "Digital Musics" category, as do works combining sound and media, computer compositions ranging from electro-acoustic to experimental music, or sound installations. This category's programmatic agenda is to expand horizons beyond the confines of individual genres and artistic currents. INTERACTIVE ART The "Interactive Art" category is dedicated to interactive works in all forms and formats, from installations to performances. Here, particular consideration is given to the realization of a powerful artistic concept through the especially appropriate use of technologies, the innovativeness of the interaction design, and the work's inherent potential to expand the human radius of action. NET VISION The "Net Vision" category singles out for recognition artistic projects in the Internet that display brilliance in how they have been engineered, designed and-especially-conceived, works that are outstanding with respect to innovation, interface design and the originality of their content. The way in which a work of net-based art deals with the online medium is essential in this category. DIGITAL COMMUNITIES This category focuses attention on the wide-ranging social impact of the Internet as well as on the latest developments in the fields of social software, mobile communications and wireless networks. "Digital Communities" spotlights bold and inspired innovations impacting human coexistence, bridging the geographical as well as gender-based digital divide, or creating outstanding social software and enhancing accessibility of technological-social infrastructure. This category showcases the political potential of digital and networked systems and is thus designed as a forum for the consideration of a broad spectrum of projects, programs, initiatives and phenomena in which social innovation is taking place, as it were, in real time. A Golden Nica, two Awards of Distinction and up to 12 Honorary Mentions will be awarded in the Digital Communities category in 2006. [the next idea] Art and Technology Grant The aim of this grant focusing on the mutually enriching interplay of art and technology is to nurture concepts for the future that young thinkers are coming up with today. This category?s target group includes interested persons throughout the world between the ages of 19 and 27, who have developed a not-yet-realized concept in the fields of media art, media design or media technology. The winner will receive a 7,500-euro grant and an invitation to spend a semester as scientific assistant and artist-in-residence at the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The Classic, 321 Queen St, $10/8 The prospect of having Vienna-based electronic pioneer Peter Rehberg (aka Pita) perform in Auckland may seem too incredible to believe, but we jest not, this will actually happen next Tuesday. The Alt.music team have just confirmed luring Rehberg away from an intensive Australian tour schedule for just long enough to do an Auckland gig at The Classic, 321 Queen St, with support from Rosy Parlane and Lovely Midget. Peter Rehberg is co-founder of cutting-edge Austrian computer music label Mego, also home to Christian Fennesz whose Endless Summer album was on everyone's year's best list a few years back. Helping redefine the aesthetics of minimal electronica, glitch, noise and techno, Rehberg is one of the most innovative experimental European musicians of the last decade. He has worked with a long list of artists all over the world, notably a collaborative album with NZ's Rosy Parlane under the name Rosenberg and a recurring collaboration with Christian Fennesz and Jim O Rourke (Sonic Youth/Wilco etc) as Fenn O'Berg. Other collaborations have seen him play alongside some of experimental music's best-known performers, including Keith Rowe, AMM, MIMEO, Kaffe Matthews, Marcus Schmickler, Sonic Youth, J?r?me Noetinger, General Magic, Tina Frank, Russell Haswell and Florian Hecker, as well as being a member of MIMEO. He won the Distinction Prize for Digital Musics at Ars Electronica in 1999, has also collaborated with choreographers Meg Stuart, Chris Haring, Gisele Vienne (DACM), Gyula Berger, and took part in the 2nd G?teborg Art Biennale, Against All Evens. Rosy Parlane started playing music in 1993 as drummer and pianist for the improvised rock trio Thela alongside Dion Workman and Dean Roberts. He subsequently began working with abstract electronic-based music, both as a solo artist and as Parmentier with Dion Workman. His full and intricate soundscapes are comprised of of sample-loops, pianos, guitars, and field recordings manipulated via digital means. Parlane has released three solo albums; two for Sigma Editions, and the most recent, Iris, for UK label Touch in 2004. Over the last few years he has also collaborated on releases with Austrian musicians Christian Fennesz, Peter Rehberg, as well as with Eddie Prevost of AMM and Mattin. Other projects include Pit Viper, Empirical and Parmentier. Under the moniker of Lovely Midget, Rachel Shearer creates aural landscapes from foreign spaces using sounds that have been digitally stripped and scrubbed down to their raw underlying textures. These are then painstakingly reconstructed into new audio environments. As an editor/designer Shearer strives to complement visuals with 'real' (at times surreal) aural environments. After an EP in 1995 for Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, the first Lovely Midget album was released in 2000 on Corpus Hermeticum. North Head was issued by American Label Family Vineyard in 2003 and a new release, Fakerie, is scheduled for later this year. Alt.music is an ongoing series of events, regularly bringing a vital injection of contemporary sound art from around the world to Auckland. Peter Rehberg's performance is the first of these shows, which will take place several times a year. Founded by Auckland gallery Artspace, Alt.music began as an international festival of experimental music and sound art in 2001, followed by successive festivals in 2002 and 2004. Previous Alt.Music artists include Pan Sonic, Tetuzi Akiyama, Jon Rose, Voice Crack, Sachiko M, Francisco Lopez, Pierre Bastien, Oren Ambarchi, Alan Licht Richard Nunns and the Dead C. I hadn't heard any of the artists music prior to this performance, though I had read about Mego label and some of the artists on the label. Nice melodic, granular sounds from Lovely Midget taking control of the harmonics. Even if she had to compete with the howling wind outside and slamming doors. Also nice to see Rosy Parlane moving around to control the different instruments/interfaces during his performance. What was the controller he was using whilst stroking the bench? Such a light touch! I couldn't see what it was from where I was sitting. Beautiful sounds too layering until the buildup at the end with guitar feedback. Peter Rehberg's sounds had such height! I could hear them flying round above me. More layers of sounds, and so loud. Music for stadiums. A variety of things have contributed to this decision - recording gear crapping out, dying, disappearing, research and 'external interests', compromised space situations et al. But still, the CRUDE mechanism proliferates. upcoming titles are: 1. DOPAMINE 20 The 'major' CRUDE working for 2006. dopamine 20 will be a triple album comprising of electronic/ electro acoustic, new wave, tek-noise, industrial caberet, and lo-fi songs. The song 'Yer dreams' will be one of the works 'singles' or 'motifs' . Check out a pre-release version of the song here : http://www.myspace.com/crudecat The album will be collated gradually and thoughtfully over 2006. 2. SAX SERPENTINE 3 The third installment in the Sax Serpentine working [precluded by Sax Serpentine and Sax Serpentine Remix] . Experimental Tenor sax, clarinet, keyboard, found sound, shawm, recorder and voice. As with Dopamine 20 this one'll be put together microtone by microtone. 3. THE WRETCHED FIVE Noise, found sound, abstract, dada, spoken word. Five albums of complete meaningless 'beauty'. will be released volume by volume throughout 2006, the first installment out May 2006. 4. THE AESTHETICS - THIRD ALBUM Last but most certainly not least is the third full length album by the latest line up of the scum rock lo-wave sing-along pub/library band the aesthetics. Will be released thru ARTLESS INTENT in conjunction with the October New Zealand tour of Crude and the Aesthetics. This one'll be a stunner, and a surpising shift in sonic attitude. 5. CRUDE LIVE 2006 collection of live outings 2006. released december 2006 FINALLY, i'll be always collaborating on prjects with people. He was 74. Paik is thought to have coined the terms "information superhighway" and "the future is now," as well as having global influence with his work. Paik's art combined the use of music, video images and sculptures in a way that set the style for future video artists. "Paik's work would have a profound and sustained impact on the media culture of the late 20th century; his remarkable career witnessed and influenced the redefinition of broadcast television and transformation of video into an artist's medium," John Hanhardt, media arts curator at New York's Guggenheim Museum of Art, said in a statement. "Through a vast array of installations, videotapes, global television productions, films, and performances, Paik has reshaped our perceptions of the temporal image in contemporary art," Hanhardt added. http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2006/01/30/paik-obit.html ----------------------------------------------- http://www.paikstudios.com/ ::posted on ::fibreculture:: mailinglist for australasian ::critical internet theory, culture and research :: info: http://fibreculture.org/mailman/listinfo/list_fibreculture.org :: FIbreculture website: http://www.fibreculture.org ::please send announcements to separate mailinglist: announce at fibreculture.org :: Announce List info page: http://fibreculture.org/mailman/listinfo/announce_fibreculture.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
