radio cartharsis, part o3
The material used in Radio Catharsis is 9 recordings taken at random from Radio One, the student radio station in Dunedin. The order I took the recordings in is the order the have been assembled in. This is process has it's roots in Cage's theories of indeteminancy and chance operations, as well as the chance based compositions of Karlheinz Stockhausen. The degeneration of the audio was achieved through the process of playing the already recorded parts as I continued recording new parts, layering more and more parts over one another creating a thicker and thicker wall of sound. The volume of the work rises steadily over the 15min 39sec, eventually reaching a peak of dysmorphic chaos at which point it rapidly slinks off into its completion, as though it it had run out of steam.
