Born in Wellington in 1972, Torben Tilly first started playing music in 1991 as the drummer in Wellington's The Garbage & The Flowers. Following the self-released cassette The Deep Niche, they went on to release a 7" on Twisted Village (1993), an LP on The Now Sound (1997), some polycarbonate 7 inches and various songs on compilation CDs. [see discography]

In 1993 Tilly moved to Australia and studied at Sydney College of the Arts, focusing primarily on sound art and installation.

Notable exhibitions include: Menschheit, Mother’s Tankstation, Dublin (2008); Tomorrow, again, Artspace, Sydney (2007); High-Tide, CAC, Vilnius and Zacheta National Art Gallery, Warsaw (2006); Anywhere Now, Scott Donovan Gallery, Sydney; Variable Resistance, Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2003).

Currently based in Berlin, Torben Tilly continues to work with long-time collaborator Jasmine Guffond in the group Minit, which they formed in Sydney in 1997. [see discography].

Over a 10 year period Minit have been performing live and producing records & sound installations based on the use of processed acoustic, electronic, and found sound sources. Their releases to date convey a unique meeting of improvised abstract electronics and stripped back minimalism, yet reveal in almost every case a penchant for the unexpected, either as a melodic twist into song or as a sudden implosion into fractured noise. Minit’s first full-length releases were with the label Sigma Editions which was co-founded by Rosy Parlane & Dion Workman in 1998. They have further released material on the labels Staubgold and Tonschacht.

In 2006 Minit formed the collaborative project Organ Eye with David Maranha and Patrícia Machás from Portugal, releasing an album on Staubgold in 2007.

Torben Tilly & Jasmine Guffond have produced installations in galleries and museums including multi-channel sound and video works, both as Minit and individually in collaboration with other artists.

Other current music projects Tilly is involved with include Full Fucking Moon (with Bek Coogan) and Bad Statistics (with Jo Contag, Mark Williams, Jeff Henderson, Justin Barr).
