Stanier Black-Five
Stanier Black-Five is an ex-UK and now Canterbury-based sound artist, writer and DJ, who in her audio work regularly fuses electronics with environmental recordings: from mesmerising aircraft drones to the pounding rhythms of trains.
Her innovative DJ sets often involve multi-turntable mayhem, using lock-grooves and customised records to carve slabs of sound. In her eclectic mixes extreme electronics meet the avant-garde, broken beats go head on with environmental recordings and psycho pop duets with op shop.
She is an editor of the New Zealand online sound art magazine, Sustain and also writes about music under different monikers for magazines such as the UK’s Noisegate (www.noisegate.org.uk) and Germany’s Datacide (datacide.c8.com).
Stanier Black-Five also makes sporadic releases on the Argot Records label which she runs, and is part of the Borderline Ballroom collective that hosts regular experimental nights in Christchurch.
