The Idle Suite

The Idle Suite are a six piece improv-rock group from Wellington, New Zealand. Their debut album Up two Sticks Rd is due for release on Last Visible Dog Records, USA in mid–2007. The band members come together from a variety NZ underground acts including Sferic Experiment, MarineVille, The Stumps, Dress, Sandoz Lab Technicians, King Loser, Cloudboy and Bad Statistics. Driven by two drummers, The Idle Suite's music is open-ended improvised rock. At times the band is content to sit on one note, at others burst into dissonance or evolve melodies. Some tracks bear the influence of the band members' background in making 'song' based music. Up Two Sticks Rd was recorded in The Idle Suite’s practice space in 2003-2006. The band emerged as a Sunday afternoon project, content to jam for hours in an inner city warehouse that doubled as home, rehearsal and recordng space. Exhilarated by the music but content to not lug amplifiers and drum kits all over town, The Idle Suite played three gigs in its first three years. Back in the warehouse someone occasionally set a mic up in the room, and on one weekend the 8 track recording set-up from another band’s recording session was pressed into action. This formed the basis of Up Two Sticks Rd. The band’s line-up is Greg Cairns (drums), James Kirk (drums), David Hall (guitar, bass), Mark Williams (guitar), Kristen Wineera (keyboards), Johannes Contag (keyboard/sampler) with guests Bevan Smith (guitar), and Andrew Wright (keyboard). In 2005 the band’s practice room was demolished and by necessity this has led to an increasing number of gigs. The Idle Suite are now interested in touring outside of New Zealand. Live recordings have been made towards their next release.
